Ice Mountain/Nature Conservancy Preserve

Private preserve, "Nature's Icebox", where ice naturally remains most of the year in crevices. The supply of ice was used for 200 years by native Americans and early inhabitants of nearby villages to store food. The temperatures are low enough to affect the nearby vegetation. The cold temperatures encourage the growth of plant species normally found only at elevations of 3000 - 4000 feet above sea level and as far north as Quebec and the Yukon.

The outcropping rock atop Ice Mountain was even used during the Civil War as a Confederate lookout spot. Off Springfield Grade Rd. between Slanesville (Rt. 29N) and Capon Bridge (Rt. 50) Groups meet in Slanesville and carpool to the preserve. Free guided tours by arrangement (2-week lead time requested). Maximum group size 15. Good physical condition is necessary to tackle these hikes. For more info., contact Steve Bailes at 304-496-9836.
